There are wide range of options available for treating erectile dysfunction (ED). The options include drugs, surgery, prosthetics and others. If you're suffering from ED, a careful professional diagnosis by qualified physician is strongly recommended before determining what treatment is right for you.
When it comes to treating erectile dysfunction, viagra is perhaps the first option that will pop up in most people's minds. It's been proven to be quite effective treatment for a large percentage of ED patients. Approved in 1998 by the FDA, Viagra is from a group of so called PDE5-inhibitor drugs which also include other well-known groups like Cialis and Levitra.
Essentially, the main function of these drugs is to enhance blood flow to the penis. However, they do have slight differences in the way each works. Each drug may also carry a different dosage recommendation. Although you can buy them without doctor's prescriptions these days, I will strongly suggest you to go and consult a physician first. Always think safety first!
Corpora cavernosa (the regions of biological tissue that are erectile) is the two chambers in the penis that are filled with spongy tissue containing smooth muscles, arteries and veins. During sexual stimulation, blood flows in and fills the chambers to create erection.
Many conditions can restrict blood flow in corpora cavernosa, Viagra and other pills are intended to work directly on the symptom, not the underlying causes. However, millions of men around the world have been using this drug safely after going through a careful examination and recommendation by qualified physicians.
Other option for treating ED includes injection therapy such as alprostadil injection. Whatever the cause of your erection problem, injecting this drug can give you firm erections. The drug needs to be injected into or near the base of the penis. It uses needle that is very sharp and narrow in diameter, hence may cause a little discomfort. Injection will generally give stronger effect but they may have side effects. Again, talk to your physician or doctor for recommendation.
In another form of treatment, alprostadil is formulated as a small pellet that can be inserted in the urethra (the small hole on the tip of the penis). This method is known as MUSE - Medicated Urethral Suppository for Erection. Very few side effects had been reported for this option. However, when first using MUSE, some men may experience minor discomfort from insertion.
Non-drug option for treating erectile dysfunction is also available such as the penis pump or vacuum constriction device. This is an old method and often considered to be out-of-date treatment for ED. However, many clinical studies still find high rates of satisfaction among those who use penis pump. It's safe and useful in cases where PDE5-inhibitor drugs like Viagra are inappropriate.
Other more extreme measure for treating ED is known as penile implant surgery. The two common types of penile implants are the semi-rigid malleable rod and the inflatable implant. The first type uses a pair of rods that are surgically inserted into the corpora cavernosa to provide artificial erection.
The inflatable implant consists of a tube implanted inside the penis along with a sac and pump that injects fluid into the container. The sac typically resides in the lower abdomen, the pump is placed in the scrotum. They allow the user to extend and stiffen the penis mechanically.
Those who are considering penile implant surgery should speak to their physicians or healthcare professionals first for probable side effects and other implications.
Which method is used to treat erectile dysfunction will depend on each individual conditions. Therefore, it's important to consult with a qualified physician first before deciding which method is right for you.
